Shutterbugs, Start Your Cameras – Lenzr Has Five New Contests!

I’m a huge fan of Lenzr, run by my friend Rob Campbell. Where else can you find a free-to-enter site for budding Canadian photographers, a place where they can actually win prizes for their photos? People like you submit photos on a theme, others vote, and you can win – simple!

Looking over past winners, you can see that there’s a wide variety, so everyone has a chance to get their photos picked. And to make it even more interesting, this group’s contests have expanded – instead of four contests, there’s now five – and they span a wide range of topics, so there’s something for everyone.

In no particular order, here’s the contests:

  • Backyard CrittersBackyard Critters Contest annoy us, cheer us up, and are a source of wonderment to our children (unless the critters are very, very big, or very, very nasty). If you’ve ever had a deer feeding in your back yard, or watched a family of raccoons troop through the grass, then those are memories you’ll carry all your life. Share the memories, and get those photos of furry critters onto Lenzr. Or, not so furry – the contest IS “Backyard critters” after all, so hummingbirds and snakes count, too! The contest is sponsored by Classic Products Roofing, a company that supplies metal roofing, and it’s for a very simple reason – not all those backyard critters are polite. With a metal roof, you can keep the whole lot of those varmints at bay, animals that would ordinarily just invade your home from the roof down. As someone who actually had raccoons drop by my fourth-floor apartment years ago, I can tell you: where’s there’s a will for these animals, there’s a way. A metal roof means they stay out of your house, and remain in the backyard. Oh, and by the way, you get a super-long roof life, energy savings, and real protection during our Canadian windstorms!
  • Concrete Ideas. Concrete Ideas Contest And what better to go with your new metal roof than an insulated concrete home? It’s no coincidence that Amvic Building System is sponsoring a contest on concrete – they already know the benefits of a design material that has been used by the Egyptians and Romans, and is now more popular than stone for building. Plus, with their customizable insulated concrete forms, you can reduce construction time, have fewer worker injuries, and reduce construction site waste, all with a product that combines the benefits of concrete with a built-in layer of insulation. So support the contest by showing more examples of concrete – concrete structures that are truly striking, like the Olympic stadium in Montreal – and let the world see how truly beautiful concrete can be!
  • Pets In Winter Coats.Pets In Winter Coats Contest Cats in cardigans. Dogs in parkas. Parakeets in boots. If you take your animal friend out into the Canadian winter, be sure to bring your camera along. Lenzr wants to see how your pet braves winter, and what he or she wears while doing it. You can already check out the contest to see how things are shaping up, and get your best friend’s photo up there too! And of course, while the snow gets ready to blow just about everywhere in Canada, The Snowmen stand ready to help with snow removal. Based in the Markham, Ontario, region, they provide the kind of snow removal service that previously only the “big boys” could afford: year-long protection of your yard from snow, whenever it occurs, by a fully insured company. For a low price they keep your driveway clean – and if you’re not home, they’ll even email you a photo so you know the job’s done! Winter’s coming, so it’s time to get those photos (and snow cleaners) ready.
  • Colorful Houses. 'conflict' contest We’ve all seen them – the house that really “stands out” from the rest. The house you see from anywhere on the street, and that everyone knows by description, not by number. Color is great when it’s done right, and a house like that can really help a neighborhood stay vibrant, or even revitalize it. But the color needs to be long lived to stay vibrant, and that’s the tie-in with the sponsor, Vi-Lux. They provide a wide range of PVC trim products specifically for homes. PVC has great color retention, long, long life, and makes a perfect addition to any home. All this means your home stays lovelier longer, and maintenance goes way, way done. So go out and celebrate those vivid houses in your neighborhood, and send in a picture of them!
  • Water On SkinWater On Skin contest means just that: a contest where you photograph water on skin. From looking at past contests, I’m very interested to see how this one turns out, because it takes a competent photographer to get a good “water in motion” shot on the skin. Of course, that’s not the only kind of photo you can submit, but you do need those two ingredients. And speaking of ingredients (smooth segue, huh?), water and skin are components near and dear to this contest’s sponsor, The Soya Boutique, a company committed to high quality products for natural skincare. How committed? They even run their WEBSITE using 100% renewable power (wind and solar) – THAT’S commitment! And it reflects in their products, which use high quality, natural ingredients, and reduced packaging to help the environment. This results in products that make you and your skin feel good – in more ways than one!

Five interesting companies, five interesting contests, and a great way to get exposure for your pics – so get started! Your pictures can get you prizes, from iPads for three of the contests, to a $500 selection of SoyaBotique products, to a genuine snowblower! But besides winning a prize, there’s the recognition: anyone can win a free contest, but imagine showing your friends the prize you won for your photo – NOW you’ll get some respect! But seriously, you get thousands looking at your photos and voting – for a budding photographer, isn’t that what it’s all about?

Drop by Lenzr.com, check out the contest rules, check out your competition, and get started. And if you aren’t already a member, join ASAP, and get your camera clicking. The contests are open now, and voting starts November 20, so you have time to get your “picture perfect” entries in. But don’t wait – “snap to it” as soon as you can!

The Miracle of Fabric Blinds

I like watching the DIY (Do It Yourself) channel – I’m a fan of construction, and watching what a bit of remodeling can do for a home gives me lots of ideas for the day I take the remodeling plunge.

One recent episode in particular impressed me: they started with what I felt was already a pleasant-looking condo, and surprisingly, improved it quite a bit with little more that a dash of paint and some new blinds. Of course, it’s no wonder the blinds made a big difference, since the place was floor to ceiling windows all along one side!

window blindsWatching the show gave me an itch to replace my old plastic horizontals with something nicer – and not coincidentally, the options are much better (and much greener) that when I first purchased my blinds.

For example, Levolor makes blinds that are not the old fashioned plastic, but new, eco-friendly fabric blinds. Eco-friendly because the fabric means extra insulation for lower heating costs (no holes for air to circulate, and up to two layers of fabric for insulation). Fashionable because the blinds just look better, with a variety of colors to choose from. And of course, they’re easier to maintain: no dust-accumulating slats to clean frequently, as the blinds are one long accordion style!

Blinds may not be the only way to rejuvenate your house or apartment – but they can make a big difference! And after all, if you have a choice between a major renovation and upgrading your blinds, isn’t it nice to know that the blinds can do a great job of perking up a home, and at a much lower price?

For The Person You Can’t Get a Gift For…

Everyone has a person like this – someone who just doesn’t fit your gift-giving pattern. Hobbies are different, interests are different; more than likely, you’ll just mess it up trying to buy something for them.

Why mention this? Because the good folks at 1800baskets.com asked me today (yesterday? what time is it exactly?) an interesting question: what are my five top reasons for giving a gift basket?

Obviously, my top reason is if I cannot figure out what to give someone – gift baskets are a great general-purpose gift.

And my other four? In no particular order, they are:

  1. Business. Why risk offending someone or giving a wildly inappropriate gift when a basket does the job so well?
  2. Group gift. A basket for the office or other group gives something for everyone – with plenty left over.
  3. Special events. Celebrating an event? Forget weird theme gifts, and get a gift basket that pleases everyone.
  4. Impulse events. For those times you’re tempted to send a ‘thinking of you card’, why not add on a gift basket – and then they’ll KNOW you’re thinking of them!

So if these ideas appeal to you, drop by 1800baskets and order some gift baskets today!

Clean Designs = Simple Solutions

I know the title is somewhat cryptic, but I’m talking about the benefits of quality design for a reason – and it starts with my bathroom sink.

My sink is the usual hard plastic bowl dropped into a particleboard/melamine counter. Cheap, ugly, and a maintenance nightmare (the edge where the two meet always accumulates dirt and moisture), these types of sinks serve no one, except the builder who put them in cheap and fast.

Now look at what a little bit of design can do – I found a web page on glass bowl sinks (officially called “Glass Vessel Sinks“). Now imagine that in a bathroom – much more stylish, less maintenance (no edge for water to get trapped in), and from what I can tell, priced competitively (they have a bowl at only $29.00, which I think is the same price point as an ordinary sink).

Looking at their products, it’s obvious you can get a nice design for the same price as a bad one. It works better, looks better, and frankly, makes you feel better looking at it. THAT is the benefit of good design…

…and what everyone should be striving for – after all, our bathrooms depend on it.

What Do You Do When Your Web Hosting Goes ‘Bad’?

Limits.

We all know about that.

For example, over the years I’ve had problems with web hosting, mainly because of limits.

In one site, I was in trouble because my PHP was too active (obviously, a common thing for a WordPress blog!). In another, I had too many files in my file system, and was reaching a limit I didn’t even know about (it turns out unread emails each counted as a file, and I wasn’t checking all my accounts frequently enough).

So to avoid these ‘after the fact’ problems (and the strain of dealing with a service that’s gone bad), I recommend checking out sites in detail beforehand. And one online resource that helps you is Web Hosting Rating. For example, checking their web hosting pages, I got a quick summary of their reviews for smaller level hosting (for example, hosting with only one or just a few domains on it) – ideal for a new Internet user with a single domain name.

Of course, they have other items; for example, an article on how to benefit from multiple domains when you buy hosting. Most sites let you put more than one domain on them for the same price – so why not combine a few sites and save big money?

Another article that may benefit one person I know discusses how to use ASP on Linux. Running the popular ASP language USED to mean needing a Windows server (which I hate working with). This article explains how to have the best of both worlds – Linux reliability and Windows compatibility.

Sites like this provide you the information you need to make an informed buying decision. If you’re shopping for a website or web hosting plan, take a look at the reviews there, evaluate your needs, and then get the perfect plan for you!
